Gary Johnson’s return to Ashton Gate ended in defeat for The Glovers on Boxing Day, the 2-1 loss at Ashton Gate against the SkyBet League 1 leaders Bristol City kept them top of the table and us in relegation trouble.

Matt Smith was causing us problems but he couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. Firstly he rounded Jed Steer but couldn’t apply the finish and would also miss an open goal from six yards, but he did get on the scoresheet in the end.

Bristol City’s pressure brought them a penalty on 25 minutes when Brendan Moloney fouled Keiran Agard according to the referee, Agard himself stepped up but Steer was equal to this as he turned it away.

Joe Bryan’s cross eventually saw Smith head Bristol City into a first half lead, the goal had been coming.

A second half penalty, just past the hour, when Nathan Smith was the next Glovers defender deemed to have committed an offence when he brought down Greg Cunningham gave the home side a second chance from the penalty spot. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas took this one and coolly slotted home to double the lead.

The goal of the day came from defender Ben Nugent when he fired pat Frank Fielding from 30 yards but his late goal, with just two minutes to play, was too late.
