It wasn’t quite to be for The Glovers against Barclays Premier League side Manchester United on Sunday as an upset was avoided and our FA Cup bid for another season ended with a 2-0 defeat at Huish Park.

We had our chances, and gave Louis van Gaal’s side a run for their money, but we’ll now be concentrating on our SkyBet League 1 survival.

Manchester United made a few changes to the side that last played but it was still a star studded starting XI with Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao the forward pairing but our unwillingness to let the visitors settle on the ball, snapping into challenges, keeping the Barclays Premier League side quiet with it well past the half hour mark before James Wilson finally managed to get a shot on target, which was easily saved by Jed Steer.

After the goalless first half Kieffer Moore, who ended up with a fetching head bandage like Manchester United’s Paddy McNair when they clashed heads, had a glorious chance to put us ahead. The ball came to the striker around six yards out who controlled but with his name potentially going up in lights it was almost as if he froze with his scuffed effort easily saved by David De Gea.

From 25 yards, into the top corner, giving Steer no chance Ander Herrera finally broke the deadlock to put the topflight side ahead with around 20 minutes left.

We weren’t beaten though and kept going, maybe Manchester United eased off the gas a little but if it wasn’t for Angel Di Maria on the goal line then Glovers captain, and boyhood Manchester United fan, Joe Edwards would have headed us level.

In the last minute though Manchester United sealed a 2-0 win when Rooney put Di Maria away who chipped over Steer and make sure that we wouldn’t force an Old Trafford replay and we would have to settle with the financial rewards this single tie brought.

It was always likely we would be “up for this one”, now we’ve got to move forward and make sure we’re as up for our SkyBet League 1 survival bid as that’s now the only focus for the remainder of the season.
