It’s commonly acknowledged, and doesn’t take a genius to know, that goals win football matches. Scoring enough of them in the first half of the SkyBet Championship has of course left The Glovers in danger of an instant return to the SkyBet League One.

Conceding too many hasn’t helped either mind!

Avoiding relegation was always going to be achieved as a miraculous achievement on a par, if not surpassing the efforts of gaining promotion to the second highest tier in English football and we’ve still got a chance of this but Gary Johnson was in the market for more firepower this month.

The chances are that before January ends he’ll still be seeking to bring in a new striker, and make sure that he’s able to extend the loans/keep who we already have at Huish Park, but James Hayter’s double in the FA Cup win over Orient on Saturday has given the manager a bit of breathing space and he’s able to rest a little easier know.

Johnson’s honest, and realistic enough, to know that the majority of players that could move on in January might not have the Glovers as their number one option and it’s due to this that we look to have missed out on Wes Thomas with the AFC Bournemouth striker destined for a move to Wolverhampton Wanders in the SkyBet League One instead.

Hayter has given Johnson some food for thought though, with him now challenged to keep him thinking and making the necessity to bring in a new striker instantly something that can be avoided and prevent him making hours of potentially fruitless calls.
