Jakub Sokolik has been a name connected with a move to The Glovers for a couple of weeks now, reports from the Southend Echo had claimed that the SkyBet League 2 side had been told that he wouldn’t be joining Southend United as he was coming to Huish Park.

Gary Johnson isn’t giving anything away though but did make reference to Southend manager Phil Brown’s comments that he was going to be joining us.

He’s insisted in The Western Gazette that as much as we’re working hard to replace Byron Webster, now that his departure to Millwall has been confirmed, nothing has been agreed to sign the former Liverpool defender.

Plenty of trialists will be taking part in training next week though as we seek to bring in the right players.

‘Managers are always pretty quick to talk about players that they’ve lost but nothing has been done.

‘I can assure our fans that the wheels are in motion to replace Byron and strengthen in a number of areas. We’re hoping to get the right players in sooner rather than later.

‘We’ll probably have around ten trialists with us next week. Tuesday has to be a clean slate for everyone at the club and any player can push their way into my starting eleven.’

Czech defender Sokolik is a free agent after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract with the Premier League side, with him spending time on loan with Southend last season that was thought to see him favour a move to him but the SkyBet League 1 seems a more likely destination, even if it isn’t with us?
