Ruben Palazuelos made his full debut for us at the weekend and thanks in part to him we secured a SkyBet Championship win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Gary Johnson has told The Western Gazette that he used his ‘worldwide scouting system’, which comprises of his brother Pete, to bring in the Spanish midfielder but he was a player known to him anyway from a spell in Scotland with Hearts.

The midfielder was one of those ‘Gary’s gambles’ but it’s paid off so far with his debut bringing praise from Johnson who will continue to monitor him before deciding what to do with Palazuelos in the long term.

‘I always thought he was a very good footballer. He’s a good passer and he doesn’t panic, and he just looks the part.

‘We’ve been waiting to get him in and certainly it was a fantastic debut. We watched him for a couple of games and he was recommended to us that he might be available to whichever Championship club wanted to take a bit of a chance on him.

‘We took the chance, like we do – one of Gary’s gambles – and today it paid off. We’ll have to wait and see how it goes, but he looks like a quality player.’

I’d expect him to play the next two SkyBet Championship fixtures anyway, starting against Ipswich at Huish Park tomorrow, as he covers for suspension initially.
