Manager Gary Johnson was delighted with the fighting spirit the team showed in the two nil victory over Birmingham City today.

Yeovil took all three points in the game thanks to a brace from James Hayter who scored both goals within the opening 20 minutes of the match, and the team defended admirably for the next 70 minutes to keep a clean sheet to boot.

The win brought to an end four consecutive defeats for the club and although it obviously doesn’t lift us out of the bottom spots, we are now again level pegging with Barnsley and four points off the safety positions, so again it stands that if we can build on this we will keep closing the gap.

Speaking to the press following the match, Johnson said.

‘This is our fifth win and it rates highly because all the other teams around us won. They are probably more disappointed because they were hoping to drop us out but we are hanging on. We are still battling and the boys showed a great spirit. That spirit will keep us in the hunt for a big part of the season. I was very proud of the boys’ effort and performance.’

Given that goal scoring has been an issue all season long for us, Johnson was also quick to praise Hayter as not only did his goals give us the points, but coming as early as they did rocked the opposition for a while and helped us get a reasonable foot hold on the game.

What really pleased the gaffer was the fighting spirit and the attitude of the players during the 90 minutes, because that’s exactly what he wants to see from them in games, and today he has no complaints.
