Gary Johnson has said that our opening Championship fixtures will be crucial to the club as we need to make a strong start to life in the second tier.

Speaking to Sky Sports our manager discussed the importance of getting off to a strong start and hitting the ground running as we face the challenging season ahead.

‘The preparation is enough time, it’s give weeks and we’re going to need all of those five weeks to make sure we’re ready. It’s about making sure the boys are ready to hit the ground running on the first game of the season.’

Johnson adds that if you find yourself bottom of the league after ten games the chances are you’ll stay there for most of the season, so he knows we have to pick up as many points as we can in the opening games so we don’t get stuck down there or left adrift.

Johnson not only has the task of building up the fitness of the lads we have, but he’s also casting an eye over some trialists as he bids to improve the quality and depth of the squad.

He says that sometimes he can tell if a player will be the right fit from just talking to them in his office, and then you see whether they can back that up with their workrate on the training field and judge if they will adapt nicely to the other members of the team and be capable of carrying out the job he wants them to do.
