Steer Heading Back To Villa

Gary Johnson has revealed that Jed Steer is heading back to Aston Villa but an extension of fellow loanee, from Fulham, Stephen Arthurworrey looks likely.

Disappointingly Johnson’s admitted to the Western Gazette that Steer’s loan spell is expected to end at the weekend after our league 1 meeting with Peterborough with it decided by his parent club that they ‘need a third ‘keeper’ at the club….

Johnson said: ‘Jed Steer looks like he is being called back as they feel they need that third keeper at Aston Villa, which is a shame as he`s been brilliant for us.’

This is a big blow to our survival hopes as Steer’s been impressive during his loan spell at Huish Park, which was a loan that he said he was ‘desperate’ to extend – it doesn’t seem to make much sense that he goes back to Villa Park as he’s playing regular first-team football with us, but what do I know!

Positively though Fulham defender Arthurworrey looks likely to stay with Johnson revealing that an extension until the end of the season is likely with his Championship parent club recognising the progress that he’s making.

He added: ‘But it looks like we have agreed with Stephen Arthurworrey and Fulham to keep him until the end of the season. He’s doing very well, he’s been a solid defender.

‘For a young lad, Stephen has done magnificently well because he’s had to be the daddy of the defence, really. He’s had a 19-year-old one side of him and a 22-year-old the other who’s only played a couple of games at centre back.

‘He’s looked very mature in his play recently and that’s credit to him. It hasn’t gone unnoticed by Fulham, they’re happy he’s progressing and obviously it seems like he’s happy to stay here.’

It looks like the additions that we’re looking to make in the next couple of days will also include a ‘keeper, unless Johnson decides to go with what we’ve got?

Strange. We have Guzan and Given. Steer getting great exposure and experience and would take over as no 2 from Shay next season. No logic in him coming back. We already have the Swiss u21 goalie as our number 3. Glad he did well for you. Good luck
