Johnson – Show Consistency And You Play

Gary Johnson has made it clear that if you show consistency when you play you’ll have a greater part to play in The Glovers SkyBet Championship campaign.

Some players, the likes of Sam Foley and Kevin Dawson, have found it harder to play regularly in the first team at this level under Johnson this season.

Johnson has told The Western Daily Press that this doesn’t mean that they don’t have a part to play, along with other ‘fringe’ players in the squad, but what it does highlight is that they aren’t producing what he would expect consistently for them to be regulars.

‘If we’d told them a year ago or before last season that they were going to have a few games in the Championship and an opportunity to prove themselves, they would have ripped your arm off.

‘They have done that and have got to show that consistency in effecting a game when selected. With some people, we will see this [the Championship] as their level and sometimes not as their level.

‘Those getting more games than others, it stands to reason that the management think they are more consistent at this level. The others have to gain that consistency at this level to get back into the team.’

His thoughts applied to the two in question, as the answers were given in direct response to questions aimed about them, but covered the fringe players in general at Huish Park.

Johnson has made it clear, more than once, that he doesn’t feel that all players at the club are SkyBet Championship standard and if you look at how we’re performing he could have a point but for a club of our size and history we’re still doing a great job.

The chance is there though for someone that is currently on the outskirts of the squad to make themselves a Glovers hero, they just have to seize this opportunity if it comes along.
