Three Or Four At What Level

Gary Johnson spoke of his pride following The Glovers FA Cup defeat at Southampton on Saturday, and we showed a valiant and spirited performance as we lost to the Barclays Premier League side.

I’m left a little confused today by his thoughts in The Western Gazette, or at least the way the newspaper reports Johnson’s comments and the spin they put on them.

He’s said that we only have three or four players capable of performing on a consistent enough basis, what I’m unsure about was if those comments were made with Barclays Premier League level in mind or if it was the SkyBet Championship level he was talking about.

I’d admit that we’ve got some players at the club that maybe aren’t, when you’re talking week in week out, quite at the level to play regularly at the level we’re just at the moment whereas they could easily in SkyBet League 1 but were his thoughts meant that way?

‘There were three or four that went right through the game and they could probably play at this level but some of the others have got to catch up.

‘I think we’re making massive progress, just to the point that you know the lads that can handle the pressure of the big games and can produce in a big game.

‘Some of our better players can’t always produce against the better teams and they’ve got to learn about themselves.’

Johnson did again stress that he’s proud of what we did at Southampton and what we’re looking to achieve at Huish Park and with continued effort on the training ground we can get mentally and physically better and eventually get to the stage where virtually an entire team can play at the level we’re at.

Maybe his thoughts are a bit of a combination of both top flight and second tier ways of thinking because I’ve admitted we’re not fully up to speed with all in the SkyBet Championship but I’m not sure that we’ve only got as little as three or four that could regularly play at this level.

What better way to make a point than getting some points against Derby County and Nottingham Forest this week.

Having looked at the quotes, I suspect he meant Premiership level – even if being respectful he meant the lower half teams. The problem for us in the league is consistency, killer finishing and belief more than anything – at least for me. The majority of players I think have shown they can get us comfortably lower midtable if they really believed it, but we definitely need more quality in key areas if anything more than survival is the aim…that said we’d still got to sort survival out.

Not sure we’ll get them from the next two games, but a run of back to back wins would really make a difference now with the points we have thrown away.
