Gary Johnson has, unsurprisingly, confirmed that it’s his intention to keep Aston Villa ‘keeper Jed Steer at Huish Park until the end of the season.

Although, when speaking in the wake of the league 1 draw with Coventry on Saturday, he knows that it might not be as straightforward as that as just because he wants this is doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll get this wish granted….

Steer gained the plaudits at the weekend when his penalty save from Gary Madine ensured that we collected a point in the nil-nil draw with Coventry – Johnson praised ‘the homework’ that he does and is hopeful of his seeing the season out at Huish Park.

He said: ‘He does his homework with goalkeeping coach Gareth Stewart and they are very vigilant on penalties. There’s a lot of psychological nonsense going on, but at the end of the day do us a favour and dive and save the ball and he did – he didn’t have very much to do today but that was top save.

‘He’s a prospective Premier League goalkeeper, we’re pleased to have him and hopefully we can keep him for longer.’

You wouldn’t expect Steer to be in, or around, the Aston Villa first-team this season so unless they can loan him our to a Premier League or Championship side, that can assure him the first-team football we’re giving him, you wouldn’t think we’ll have any problems with an extension would you?
