Johnson Backs Morgan To Shine

Adam Morgan’s career at Huish Park started brightly enough with the then Liverpool player enjoying a successful start to his Glovers career as he started our first three SkyBet Championship fixtures.

Since then though, and last featuring for us against Burnley last month, Morgan’s only featured as a substitute in three more games but he has still joined us on a permanent basis when he signed a two and a half year contract in January.

Gary Johnson has explained a problem with illness to The Western Gazette today that has impacted on his fitness levels but doesn’t think the attacker is too far from full fitness with him then backed to make the grade at SkyBet Championship level.

‘He’s only young and he’s very young as far as the Championship is concerned. You can’t put them in there and leave them in there until you know they’re ready.

‘It won’t take him long because he’s a very good footballer, he knows the game and he’s a super finisher. We’ve just had to push him with his fitness.

‘He wasn’t very well a little while ago, that set him back a week or two and he’s had to build up his strength again.

‘He’s getting there and with the young lads it can take them a little bit of time to get their Championship legs and lungs.’

It’s easy to sometimes put players in, even if they aren’t ready, and leave them there. This is what I like about Johnson, he doesn’t do this. You want players to be ready made when it comes to the first team but he can see beyond that and views the bigger picture.

Morgan was signed to make an impact this season and it sounds like he still will, and soon.

Once he has his ‘legs and lungs’ of this level we could certainly do with some of those finishes that the manager speaks about as our SkyBet Championship status might depend on it.

Looking forward to this lad really getting a run and getting his confidence up for us. Not everyone will make it at a club like Liverpool but having come through their ranks, there’s clearly something about him and we’ll only see the best 10 games into a run really in my view.

That should tie in with the season going on and he might get into his stride in time to show this and help keep us in the SkyBet Championship.
